My interest in body modification stems from being a sci-fi geek. At least, what I got out of immersing myself in "escaptist literature" is an interest in exploring the boundaries of what it means to be human.
I also consider myself to be a Transhumanist - which is based on liberal humanism, but adds the dimension how new and future technologies may change the whole game.
I'm quite new to actually applying this to my body. My first tattoo is only a few months old, though I had my tongue pierced about 5 years ago.
I see tattoos and piercings as artistic/expressive, but I still await the technology that will allow more extreme mods - enhancement.

Back again, again
2007/09/08 21:01 So it's been what, over a year... Just too damn lazy (or busy, whichever sounds better) to submit new photos and keep my account open. So here's my annual (bi-annual?) update. A few new tattoos, new home in a new city, different car, different job... life just keeps going on, don't it?
Well, back again in another year or two. Or maybe sooner, no promises tho'.

2005/11/09 17:10 Hey, I'm chuffed
It seems that Shannon posted my creative commies tattoo on the modblog modblog.bmezine.com/entries/200511081010.html which then got picked up by my other favourite site, boingboing boingboing.net
Cool! I've had my column-inch of fame.
The posting seems to have raised a few issues about copyright, so I thought I'd save my comments for posterity. Not that anyone really cares, but it's a great place to store what I wrote in case I want to rip myself off for ideas later...
I strongly support the right of creative people to benefit from their work - whether that be finanically or just by enancing their reputation. However, the problem is that copyright law is being used by IP Barons (I made that up - deliberate analogy to "robber barons" of the past intended) as a weapon to defend their monopoly position. Organizations like RIAA and MPAA are not creative people, they've just bought the souls of few of them and made them obscenely rich, while the other 99.9% of creative people can't afford to break into their high-stakes game. Technology is lowering the barriers, making it easier to create, to remix, to distribute & promote, and will require new ways of doing business. And the good ol' boys don't want none of that... That's one opinion anyways.
If you create anything, or if you listen to music, read books, watch TV or movies... you need to care about this. I'd suggest the Electronic Frontier Foundation website www.eff.org for more information.

2005/11/04 19:47 Ok so I went and let my membership expire... happily my pittiful content is still here.
bought my way back on with some photos of my new tattoo. I'll be posting those here soon. I just have to give a big "You Da Man!" to Rob Hope at the Dutchman Tattoos, the man is gifted.
Once you get me started...
2005/06/22 21:56 Cloud asked me a question today and I realized a had a few thoughts, and I don't put my thoughts down in writing often enough. So thank-you for the question!
------------------
You mean, would I make myself a cyborg? Sure, I don't think I'd have any hesitation with the concept, but I'd have to put thought into exactly what modifications/replacements I would make - getting something for the coolness factor has appeal of course, but functionality is important too. Neural interfaces would be high on the list, I'm old enough to notice that some things don't last forever - I could use an cybernetic memory for instance :-)
Of course, bio-tech has potential too. On the purely meat side it's mind-blowing to imagine what people might do if they had complete control over their bodies' shape, size, colour, texture, gender...
The technologies are coming but I think the big concern is: will we be permitted to use them? Given some governments are trying to outlaw things like tongue splitting, how are they going to react to people turning themselves into chimerae (sp?) or seven-foot hermaphrodidic Amazons with feathers, horns and claws? (um, maybe I have to admit to reading a few Anime mangas too :-)
