I fully intend to get my head ripped off for this; but I'm feeling a little Rick Mercer-ish and am inclined to exercise my freedom of speech.
FUCK CHRISTMAS.
I don't think there is anything I hate even close to as much as this holiday.
Somehow, in this all-encompassing nation it is just this social norm... There is an utter lack of choice.. and I want to bitch about it.
This time of year it is somehow my duty as a human being to not only put up with, but participate.
There is no avoiding Christmas, try as hard as I might. No matter what my religious affiliation (or raging non-affiliation) I am to be a part.
So many people agree that the whole baby Jesus facade is gone, and they just do it for the joy, or the family..
more obviously the social homogenization and the consumerism.
In a country where we are supposed to be welcoming of all races and religions I find everybody to be really fucking pushy about being a part of all this. I hate to imagine what it must be like for the Jewish or other religious groups.
It also makes me think that if I so happened to be Jewish (et al) would I get so much flack for taking this sort of stance, or making these sorts of statements?..
And now more random thoughts:
In a time where everything is green... The environment is in such dire condition that plastic bags are becoming a taboo... how much of the world's forests do you think were depleted on something as petty as wrapping paper?
How many of you can claim to even buying recycled wrapping paper? or if so, receiving all your new toys in recycled wrapping paper?.... oh and then there's still the rest of those trees that were cut down, decaying in everyone's livingrooms
Even non-participation is IMPOSSIBLE... in the workplace there is some sort of gift-exchange or secret santa shit of some sorts.. Isn't there rules of religion in the workplace... I doubt the labour board would fucking bat an eye at my formal complaint (as they exchange their baked goods behind their plate glass window.. lined in blinking lights).
I am so fucking sick of people complaining about their local government's calling it a "Holiday Tree" and that you want your "Christmas" back... FUCK YOU... FUCK YOU SO MUCH!!
THEY STILL FUCKING PUT UP YOUR TREE... and I have to fucking look at it.
Do you see a fucking lit up dreidel beside it? Maybe some Kwanza lighting? no...
Establishing that your local government is already being ethnocentric to only catering to your religion.
Not to mention that no matter what religion or not, we all have to pay taxes; and that money paid for the fucking Tree...
I am Atheist.. I believe I have a right to be in this country. I am as patriotic as anyone around.. This isn't some sort of "if you don't like it, then leave" situations. I was raised to believe and taught in school, that this country is accepting and welcoming of all peoples... that is democracy.
I can understand that everything is subjective.
However, this season is exceedingly trying on me. I would ultimately like to be left alone about it.
I would like to enjoy the winter season (my favorite season) without having the weighted surroundings of Christmas shoved down my throat.
I am seen as an asshole because I don't buy gifts, yet, reciprocally I do not accept gifts..
I shouldn't have to explain my beliefs about the holiday, as I don't expect you to explain yours. To each their own. Yet, I am constantly doing so, and defending myself... and being called a "Grinch" just because I have the backbone to actually stand up for my non-religious beliefs, and simply not participate.
Is there no respect towards that? I can't even get any from my family...
It gets me so pissed off that I rant online about it...
I accept that I will get a barrage of backlash from you readers.. and I welcome that. This is a democratic Canada.. Everyone has the right to express their opinions just as I have.
I just hope I have at least brought a new understanding to it, whether you the reader are religious or not
