Whatever doesn't kill us makes us stronger, or something like that, right?

I am:

42 years old but I sure as hell don't feel like it,
single,
straight but not narrow,
very shy but working on it,
an office equipment service technician,
not a goth per se but you could say I'm gothically inclined,
into cybergoth however,
a licensed firearms owner,
into a medieval re-creation group (SCA),
very eclectic in my music tastes,
generally a happy person though I look like I scowl,
cynical but optimistic,
friendly and approachable though I look distant and aloof,
at times too nice for my own good,
learning to be a bastard when I need to be,
considered strange by the normal people,
considered normal by the wonderfully strange people,
and more.

The last several weeks have been quite busy. Just as I use the excuse that people from the Niagara region might stop by here on the way home from Darkrave to put my house in order at the beginning of each month, so too I used people might be crashing here after my Halloween party to finally do something about the guest bedroom that my brother was using. I had painted and put up border and trim in the room in '98 and had purchased and stained oak casing and baseboards in the summer of that year. I was going to install the casing and baseboards but then my brother moved in and so I put it on hold and just stored it in the basement. I had been moving stuff around the house over the last few months since my brother moved out and had mostly finished off making the front spare room into a library. Then 3 weeks ago on the Saturday, looking at the grungy grime that my brother using the guest bedroom had left behind I decided to get off my bum and went to Home Depot, picked up some paint, and also 140 sq ft. of laminate flooring because while he never smoked in the house the smell of it was in the carpet. It took me 5 or 6 hours but I painted the room and the closet, cleaned up and then went to Fetish Masquerade that evening.

I was first in line so I was able to get the first of the new laser cut stainless steel FM member cards. Sweeet! The event is in a new location now and I must say I quite like it. It's a nice and clean location to be sure. Security is a little strict with their searches but such is life. Unlike Queen St. at Bathurst where street parking if you can find it is free past 9 pm, you have to pay for street parking until 2 am. Ah well! I hung out in the DJ booth talking to Laz for most of the night and at one point his hard drive kakked out. In a bind for music he threw a long play CD on while I quickly drove him to his place so he could grab his CD binder and we raced back to the club in time. All in all it was a pretty good night.

The following week had me coming home from work and spend each evening working on lifting the carpet and underlay in the guest bedroom, laying down the laminate flooring and installing the casing and baseboards. Saturday saw me shop for curtains and a curtain rod and install it and then off to Tokyo CyberMonster that evening. Good times were had at the event and I was invited to an after-party at Casa Dreamstate 7 It was my first time there and good times were had. Finally someone pointed out the window and mentioned that lights were coming on that could not be turned off, aka the sun was rising, and I took my leave at that point and mosied on home.

Sunday afternoon, given the look of the new guest bedroom and not liking the look of it's decrepit light fixture I headed to Crappy Tire to pick up a ceiling fan, a new light switch, and a bookcase. I installed the fan and switch and was quite pleased with having that room finally done, 11 years after first starting work on it. I put the bookcase together and put it in the library and was quite pleased that the library room was now done. Two rooms done and still a week to go 'til the party.

Monday morning, once again admiring my handiwork, I sat in the leather armchair in the library which is across from the window and watched the sunrise through the black curtains which while it blocked out the view of the houses across the street still allowed me to see the shape of the sun as it rose.

The rest of the week saw me picking up supplies and begin decorating the house, inside and out.

My 14th annual (13th Part II) Halloween party last Friday went rather well with a goodly number of people showing up including some unexpected though quite welcome faces. In attendance were Tory, Maggie, Michelle, Dan, Dan aka Hamish, Greg, Lori, Alex, Anna, Paul, Erinn, Gil, Eli, Michelle C. and her bf whose name is escaping me right now, Murray, and Boychuk!!!. The evening started off rather strangely with my looking out during party preparations to see a number of police cars lined up the block and a bit further up a firetruck. Later on a discrete black car arrived with a gentleman with a satchel who approached the house where all the action was happening. Guests who arrived and passed the black car told me that the sign in the window said it was the coroner's office. What a hell of a start to a party! I know I go all out in decorating the house for Halloween but I swear I had nothing to do with that. I still have yet to talk to the neighbors to find out what happened. There were a number of fabulous costumes at the party. I had a wolfman costume and someone thought it was quite clever that I picked a costume based on my my Randwulf moniker. Er, uhm, I wish I could say I was that clever. I just picked up what was available at the last minute because I had several other costume ideas not come to fruition including a ghost costume with piercing jewelry in various risque portions of it. Next year! Good times were had by all methinks with numerous rounds of Jagerbombs, etc. ingested The last guest left around 8 am leaving 1 over-nighter in the way of Gil, and my NCPIC. My NCPIC and I woke up around 1 pm, found ourselves to still be a bit drunk and napped for another couple of hours. My NCPIC left for a hot tub party leaving Gil and I to chat for several hours while I started cleaning up. He took his leave around 4:30 pm or so and still I continued on cleaning up. *grin*

The kiddies started coming around for Trick or Treating around 6:30 but I found there wasn't as many this year. It's a downward trend in numbers coming out it seems. I found it goes in cycles so having found the last couple of years the numbers going down I thought this year would be an upswing and ended up over-buying treats. I had 3 boxes of 60 bags of potato chips and Doritos and even though I was handing two bags out to each kid I still ended up with quite a lot leftover. More for me!

Once it hit shortly before 9 I shut off the lights and dragged all the deco inside. By 9:30 there was no evidence outside of the house, except for the mound of dirt on the lawn for the grave, that there were any decorations at all. Just in time for my NCPIC to arrive for us to get ready to go to Subspace. It took a while getting up there and parking was a nightmare but we finally got in around 12:30, hung out for bit with people we knew, and headed back home again at 2:30 part II aka 3:30 with the time change.

Lazed around Sunday for the most part. Rented Ice Age: Rise of the Dinosaurs that evening. Went to bed early because of an early morning call that needed doing absolute first thing in the morning.

Received a call from my NCPIC Monday afternoon that someone had canceled on going go see The Misfits with her that night and really wanting to go and not wanting to waste a ticket asked if I would please go. I agreed and got home as soon as I could after work and away we went. All in all the show was rather good. The first 3 opening acts were pretty good. The Misfits came on and they were pretty good as well. Not spectacular in my mind, but at least I can say I've been to one of their concerts now! The lead singer, while he had arms the size of bowling balls, wisely kept his shirt/jacket on as opposed to years past. After the show people were crowding the stage in adulation and he would rub his thumb across the his eye make-up and smear it across people's foreheads like he was giving the sign of the cross or something. Weird.

Tomorrow night sees me going to the Red Rooster at 484 Plains Rd. in Burlington to see MDM play. Saturday sees me cleaning the house and such, you know, just in case people want to stop by after Darkrave that night. Saturday night is, you guessed it, Darkrave v. 113, which will be my 56th consecutive one and my 96th in total. Announcements were made this afternoon about the epic 40 hour long Darkrave taking place from 6 pm Friday, January 1st until 10 am Sunday, January 3rd and I'll be picking up my advance tix for it at DR tomorrow night.

Still debating getting tix for the Skinny Puppy In Solvent See show next Friday night. A number of people I know are going so I'm leaning towards it, though we'll see!

Well, this has been a long post it seems, but I must be off now!

That was easy

Went to the MNR office today with my Hunter Education Examination Report, showed them my RPAL card, paid my roughly $9 and now I have my temporary hunting license, or rather the Record of a Temporary Hunting/Fishing Outdoors Card, until such time as the proper Hunting/Fishing Outdoors Card comes in the mail. I had to turn in my Outdoors Fishing Card which still had a Fishing license tag good 'til the end of this year so they of course affixed a Fishing tag to the back of the temporary record. I paid another $9 for a Small Game license tag and that's affixed there as well. Altogether I think it took less than 5 minutes. This takes care of me at the provincial level.

Now the harder part is researching the various township and county license fees if any and if so how much, firearms discharge by-laws, which areas have Sunday hunting prohibitions, etc, etc, etc. I've spent the better part of this evening scouring various websites for just that and am keeping a notebook beside me to help keep track of what I've found.

It's not just a matter of going out into the woods and blasting away like one might think!

A new home found

A co-worker of mine contacted me yesterday wondering if I was interested in some rifles. His neighbor had a friend who was getting on in years and everyone thought it best that the firearms were no longer in the house. Arrangements were made so I could have a look at them last night. The one is an older bolt action Lakefield Arms Mark II in .22 lr in decent shape. The other was a Browning BL-22 Grade I in excellent shape. The asking price for both was $250. For 2 decent .22 rifles I thought it was a good price, especially for the Browning, so I agreed to the price. Further it would save them being sent to the smelter if they decided to turn them into the police instead which would indeed be a crying shame.

As much as I despise the registry, I'll grant the CFC that having them transfer the rifles into my name over the phone was extremely easy and relatively hassle-free. I initiated the transfer this morning, giving them as much information as I had at my end, but to complete it I had to have the seller talk to the CFC which I did late this afternoon. A transfer ID number was issued, I paid the seller the money, I took possession of the rifles and now they're home safe and sound! I'll have to see how they shoot when next I go to the range! Huzzah!

Feeling a little old today

It was pointed out in this MetaFilter post that it was 30 years ago today that Rapper's Delight by the Sugarhill Gang was released.

I still have the 45 rpm record of the song I bought when it first came out.
