Seriously, go rent Paris is Burning. Right now.
Quick and dirty overview, it's a documentary about the Ballroom scene, a community of mostly black and Latino/a gay men who would stage these amazingly elaborate party/competitions, including lots and lots of drag. But the Ball scene isn't just a party, it's a whole community and lifestyle and way of being that is just so incredibly deep and rich, and has really affected America in ways I never imagined.
You know "Vogue"? Madonna didn't come up with that. No, she stole it from black drag queens in the bronx, and this movie shows you all about it.
Not to mention some pretty fucking brilliant observations by incredibly fabulous queens about race, class, community, family, gender, sexuality, image, acceptance, and stealing fast food. (Best movie moment ever: "See? They put the cheese on the meat!" This scene will make you piss youself laughing.)
I'd always wanted to see it, cause I new it's a queer classic, but lately it seemed more relevant. I've got a temporary part time job working as a drop-in superviser at The Attic/, Philly's queer youth center. The kids who are regulars at the drop in are very involved with the ball scene, and I've been learning a lot about it just listening to them, and watchng them vogue around the building.
Anyhow, I'm rambling too much to make sense and not enough to be interesting, so I'm gonna finish up here and just suggest as strongly as I can that you shold all see this movie, you'll learn a million things about this community and yourself, and you will laugh until your cheeks hurt.

I just got prescribed wellbutrin. I'm not totally psyched about it. I'm reluctant to be on any mental health drugs that I have to take all the time.. I was more hoping for somehting like xanax, because really, I feel like my anxiety and whatnot is totally episodic, and comes on at a moment's notice, and hits like a truck. I was on zoloft and prozac for a time, and didn't like how I kinda felt all wrapped up in plastic. And I've heard some really scary side effects of wellbutrin. But he did say it's totally likely I may only need it for a few months, just to get me by all the crap that's been making life hard lately (sorry IU haven't really been sharing any of that crap... i just never really feel like writing about it.)
What can you guys tell me about your experiences with wellbutrin?
